Bien Irizarry, originally from Puerto Rico, developed as an artist in New York.  He studied at the School of Art & Design, the Arts Students league and the National Academy of Arts.  He has developed his skills in bronze art while working at art foundries throughout this country. One of his first and foremost influences is the work of Rodin.

His subject matter remains simple yet powerful: branches, clouds, stones – even a bird. “I relate to these in a fundamental and metaphorical way,” Bien says. “I can compose with branches quickly, covering surface space, expressing hardship, death, new beginnings and life through a range of textures and movements. Clouds allow me great space, pressure, and atmosphere. Stones or rocks are ancient, wise and defiant. The bird fantasized freedom.”

Clear acrylics are a favorite medium and are the primary element in his work. He fascinates his viewers by the effects of light, the control of gravity, easy carving, and assembling in a modernistic manner. The wood then lends distinct warmth. Natural stones and rocks provide weight and earthy color.

Bien Irizarry currently exhibits in several galleries in the Southwest, and his collectors are from all over the United States.

The Kingdom of................Russell Stephenson

Aspects of the Buddhist Dhammapada say, “Death can be a teacher. Only in facing death, those of loved ones and our own, can we be free from the fear of it and learn the lessons it has to teach about life.”
I think of this quote when I look at the body of artwork Russell Stephenson executed after his near fatal motorcycle accident in the Texas Hill Country in May of 2013. With every rib broken, two punctured lung sacs, and a severely separated right shoulder, Stephenson had many months or recuperation ahead.
As a right handed artist, the unfortunate circumstances did not keep him from painting for long. With small yet painful excursions into the studio, the teacher became the student; learning patience as he re-taught himself precision and control, exploring ambidextrous exercises while learning to paint left-handed.
During this recovery time Stephenson worked his way up from small sketches and paintings, then to medium and eventually working on large artworks; until he was formulating his grandiose masterpieces, some measuring 84” wide. Here, alone in the studio with his thoughts, his vision and unforeseen trauma, Stephenson would struggle with extreme pain; making visual treasures that he brought into this world from the multifaceted suffering.
The aesthetic, appearance, statement and underlying resonance in this series of artworks could not of been anything else but what they were -- conceptual artistic epiphanies that gracefully captured relentless notions of the creation of the universe, religion and the monotheistic qualities of the Big Bang theory.
“Kingdom Come”, 36” x 84” oil on wood panel painting is an impactful tribute to these trying times. One of only a few this size, “Kingdom Come” engulfs the viewer in a metaphoric wave of quasi- religious adumbrate. Part landscape, part Lascaux cave painting, part universal truth, “Kingdom Come” radiates an energy similar to an unexplored nebula, a faraway galaxy, or an exploding star; while visually grounding the audiences’ experience in earth tones- bring the evolving mystery closer to earth. Ignoring the separation of the heavens from the earth, light and dark, movement and stagnation, scars and healings all move, work and play within the pictorial field; giving rise to a language that all can understand. Conceived out of suffering; born out of pain, and thrived out of love.

RED FALL

Sept. 13, 2014 – Oct. 1, 2014

OPENING SATURDAY,

SEPT. 13, 2014

4 PM  -  8 PM

In anticipation of the long awaited cooler autumn season, J.R. Mooney Galleries of Fine Art, Boerne will spotlight a selection of paintings for September 2014 Second Saturday Art & Wine;  bringing excitement to the impressionistic qualities of fall landscapes paintings in an exhibit titled: “RED FALL”.

Gathering 10 artists ranging from Texas Vintage artists like W.A. Slaughter and Porfirio Salinas to regional icons, Cliff Cavin and Sidney Sinclair to local star Russell Stephenson - Gallery Director, Gabriel Diego Delgado has curated a handful of artworks from the gallery collection that culminate to a visual epiphany of the seasonal change.  A red, orange and earthy toned exhibition tugs at the hopeful demise of an overheated summer; an artistic voice that speaks of a desperate need to a temperature departure.

With a nostalgic sense of crisp leaves crunching underfoot, a smell of cool autumn nights and a wishful thought of a quenching rain, RED FALL is the light at the end of the tunnel; a visual reminder there are colder nights ahead, there are times we can open our windows and doors, and not all days in South Texas are outdoor furnace-scape.
