The Beauty in the Banal of Seth Camm's "Bread and Butter" painting
The Beauty in the Banal
“Bread and Butter” by San Antonio artist, Seth Camm is an extraordinary
still life painting encased in a rugged and raw skin, breathing with bellicosity. Thick underlays of heavily applied oil paint
are worked and reworked, striving for absolute painterly perfection. This direct and distinctively meticulous
quest for definitive and absolute finesse is mirrored in Camm’s artistic
persona of self-tormented pursuit to make the painting come alive. Camm’s preference for a dark and melancholy
aesthetic is fine-tuned and masterly applied to the mundane and banal still
life, canonizing it with academic importance.
A toaster with a slightly lopsided slice of warmed bread totters
off to the left side, confined to the narrow slots of metal constrictions- an appliance asylum- while purposefully polysemous
petals of the floral bouquet adds a sense of traditional still life etiquette;
an addition that balances out the arrangement.
The triangular composition of the toaster to the stick of
heavily layered yellow butter to the perfectly presented buttered toast gives
the eye a pleasant linear anchor to explore the tabletop; all centered on the detail
of the convex reflection. The choice of
a white tablecloth starkly contrasts the dark and almost blood red
backdrop. Camm uses an off-kilter and obtuse
angular backsplash countertop corner as a repetitive compositional element,
mirroring the viand.
However, the key player in this entire quasi-lugubrious
classical configuration is the mirrored surface of the metal. The foreshortened
reflections, the bantam angular sophistications are striking in their stunted
glory. Carnival horror house distortion
mirrors offer an eyeful of edible enticements.
“Bread and Butter” offers edginess that is underlying, a
composition that is traditional, and a lustrous aura of a woebegone world.

Alexander & Victor Fine Art at the Boerne Gallery for December’s Second
Saturday event. A trunk show not to be
missed, Alexander & Victor representatives will be on hand with a fine
selection of fine art and home accessories from their unique inventory,
including artists F. Tulok, Gantner, Eduard and Goar Edgaryan and many others.
Having mastered the art of
painting on copper, Tulok has found a unique ground that has allowed his colors
to flourish. Part old master painter,
part realist, Tulok has rediscovered the chiaroscuro aesthetic; allowing a new
generation of patrons to explore the blackened surroundings and out of view
light source- accentuating the traditional still-life compositions. His soft shadows, deep crimsons and vibrant
hues could not be achieved any other way, but with the exploration of this
unusual metallic undercoating – copper.
Often exaggerating the dew, moisture and condensation on the elements in
the composition, Tulok redefines a classical conception with a still life re-emergence.

Contemporary Still life with Tulok
..."Tulok, a native to Budapest has always enjoyed painting and drawing. He credits his break from his professional career in 1989 as a life changing decision that jump started his professional artistic endeavors. Refining his trade and using a little fine art finesse, Tulok’s art is very distinguishing with a characteristic Renaissance style.

A Recourse on Renaissance Renditions

...Still life painting has always been the calculated
arrangements of the traditionalists. Compositions that artistically spotlight a
visual gauge of craft and aesthetic; a lost art muffled in an internet based
culture, items that are now foretold, and destined for an inevitable “like” or
“bought” pin on an artist owned Pinterest® board.
Dating back to ancient Egyptian and Greek civilizations, still
life paintings are reflective of afterlife necessities or lavish belongings of
some elite Bourgeois. The “contemporary” art world has embraced this genre for
ages, reveling in its ability to call upon so many aspects of everyday life -
kitsch, deadpan, or other.
In Plata y Uva by
Luzanquis (a Peruvian painter), the Cimmerian quality engulfs the viewer. The
quasi Renaissance era composition evokes a Dürer idiosyncrasy. Elegantly adorned sterling silver carafes
with accented handles flank the pile of mahogany colored hardbound books. Complementing the darkened wood credenza,
these purposefully placed publications acts as a religious altar, amplifying
the importance of the bowl of “uvas” or grapes.
Complete with a melted and exhausted dinner candle, this singular
element also conjures subtle religious overtones. Motifs are a plenty in Plata y Uva with circles and spheres
repeated in the triad of fruits purposely placed in a triangular configuration
of stoic allegories; a traditional religious compositional component.
Elliptical lips of various kitchenwares and the circular plate reinforces the
oval, while linear elements create a dichotomy of visual planes.
